During your winter visit to Todos Santos, be sure to witness the heartwarming turtle release initiative by Tortugueros Las Playitas A.C. This environmental conservation organization is dedicated to safeguarding and replenishing the delicate marine ecosystem of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Operating the northernmost greenhouse in the region, they nurture vulnerable Olive Ridley and black sea turtles, as well as the endangered leatherback turtles that hatch during the winter and spring.
Typically held around sunset, volunteers release newly hatched turtles from the beach into the vast Pacific Ocean. All interested individuals are welcome to observe this enchanting spectacle, witnessing these tiny creatures embark on their journey into the expansive ocean. If these turtles survive, they will return to this very beach in 10-12 years to lay their eggs.
It's important to note that the survival odds are slim, with only one in 1000 hatched turtles making it to adulthood. Observing this event evokes both joy and sadness.
Attending the turtle release is a complimentary activity, although donations to support the dedicated volunteers are appreciated. Every night, they traverse a 22-mile (36 km) stretch on their quads, locating nests filled with eggs to transport to their protected greenhouse, safeguarding them from predators. Additionally, they offer educational programs for children, allowing them to experience a day as budding biologists.
